Zamalek derives from Zomlok, a Kurdish word meaning straw hut.

One of my favorite sections of Cairo is Zamalek, an island in the Nile that lies between downtown Cairo and Giza. It's an upscale garden area with a number of attractions, shops, restaurants and bars.

This mosque was built in 1318, possibly on the site of an Ayyubid mosque founded by Saladin, which al-Nasir Muhammad demolished.
