[0009].Inside the Bibliotheca Alexandrina

The main room of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina!

This is the new building inaugurated in 2003 of the famous Library of Alexandria, destroyed centuries ago, and at that time, the largest in the world.

[0008].Abul Abbas El-Mursi mosque

Abul Abbas El-Mursi was a disciple of the great Sufist Abul Hassan El-Shazli.

I don´t know what this means, but I feel very smart knowing it.

What is Faith? When your good deed pleases you and your evil deed grieves you, you are a believer… (Ahmad)

[0007].Roman amphitheatre

The theatre was a way of keeping people busy and happy so they would not plot against the emperor.

An actor would speak the lines, and a second one mimed with gesture meaning what was being said, like feeling a pulse to show a sick person, making the shape of a lyre with fingers to show music.

Costumes and masks were worn to show the type of person on stage, a purple gown for a rich man, a striped toga for a boy, a short cloak for a soldier, a red toga for a poor man, a short tunic for a slave etc. The masks, brown for men, white for women, smiling or sad depending on the type of play.

[0006].An example of the architecture

One of the nice examples of architecture at the waterfront, a mix of arab and italian style from the begining of the XX century.

[0005].Eastern Harbour

In one end of this bay, used to stand one of the seven wonders of the Ancient world, the Lighthouse of Alexandria, unfortunately it´s not there anymore, in it’s place stands a medieval fort. But that´s for another visit.

[0003].First glimpse of the Mediterranean

Right after arriving in Alexandria, I’ve headed to the waterfront.

The sea breeze, the sound of the crashing waves…

[0002].First time in Alexandria

When someone visits Egypt, it’s usual to come upon something ancient and full of history. Alexandria it’s one those places, the old and the new library, the lighthouse, the roman catacombs, and so on. Check it out at wikipedia.

I intend to return, in order to visit to the places I was unable to visit this time. And I got my eyes on some clams and calamari, they looked very tasty, while I was having a grilled seabass for lunch.
