The step pyramid at Sakara was built for King Dzoser, around 2600 BC, and it's the oldest complete stone building known until these days.

The Great Sphinx is believed to stand as a guardian of the Giza Plateau, facing the rising sun. This monumental statue is a fabulous creature which has the head of a woman, the body of a lion and the wings of a bird.

The arcades of the Sultan al-Nasir Muhammad ibn Qala'un Mosque and around it's courtyard are formed by marble columns with pre-Islamic capitals. This one was Coptic.

The word Copt is derived from the Greek word Aigyptos, which was, in turn, derived from "Hikaptah", one of the names for Memphis, the first capital of Ancient Egypt. The modern use of the term "Coptic" describes Egyptian Christians.

The Citadel of Cairo was built by Salah al-Din between 1176-1183 as a royal residence and military barracks. Over the course of its long history as the seat of government for the Ayyubid, Mamluk, Ottoman, and Khedival rulers of Egypt.

Zamalek derives from Zomlok, a Kurdish word meaning straw hut.

One of my favorite sections of Cairo is Zamalek, an island in the Nile that lies between downtown Cairo and Giza. It's an upscale garden area with a number of attractions, shops, restaurants and bars.
